Acne is a disorder of the skin's sebaceous glands that results in plugged pores, inflammation, bacterial infection leading to papules, pustules, cysts and sometimes permanent scarring of the skin. Being one of the most common skin diseases, over 80% of the population aged 14-30 will suffer from it regardless of gender, geography or skin type, and 25% of these will have permanent scars. Though commonly considered as a teenager problem and usually beginning in adolescence, 20% of all adults suffer from varying degrees of active acne. For some, it is simply annoying, for many others however, acne is a significant problem that has a high impact on their lifestyle and quality of life. The traditional approach is use different medications, however many of these acne medications are expensive and may cause significant side effects. They require several months of continuous treatment, and many patients do not respond to them or witness only limited effects.

The sebum production rises, resulting in a blocked pore. The Anaerobic situation creates the perfect environment for the P. Acnes bacterium to reproduce colonies and release porphyrin. Optimal light wavelength especially green and red penetrates into the follicle to target the P. Acnes by triggering porphyrin activation. The Green Light causes the porphyrin molecules to release oxygen radicals. The oxygen radical attacks the acne bacteria and destroys it.  The Red Light produces anti-nflammatory results. The Heat opens the pores and speeds up the chemical reaction.

BEFORE, DURING and AFTER

This procedure generally requires no special pre-treatment care. You will be required to wear eye protectors for IPL and LED machines. Depending upon the type of system used, you may experience a slight stinging sensation in the area treated during the procedure. The treatment will take 15 to 30 minutes and depending on the area treated. You may feel a little sore due to the procedure applied in terms of:

• Slight reddening of the treated area which rarely happens depending on the type of skin where the treatment is applied
• Slight inflammation sensation but there absolutely no ill-effects

Do not exposing the area treated to the sun without a sunscreen for at least 2 weeks to reduce the risk of pigmentation or change in skin colour. Most patients will be able to return to work immediately following the procedure.
